Mahindra Diesel Sales Soar: Over 75% of SUVs Sold in FY25

Scorpio and Bolero pushed Mahindra to dominate diesel SUV sales in FY25; petrol and EVs saw moderate gains.

Mahindra & Mahindra, a large Indian company that makes SUVs, sold a large number of diesel cars in the financial year 2025 (FY25). Most of the SUVs they sold, more than three-quarters of them, ran on diesel. Mahindra also took a big part of the diesel car market, getting 55% of all diesel sales in FY25. They sell many diesel SUVs like the Scorpio, XUV700, XUV3XO, Thar, and Thar Roxx.

How Petrol and Electric Cars Fared

Even though diesel cars were the main sellers, petrol cars still made up a good chunk of Mahindra’s total sales, about 20.5%. Electric cars, or EVs, had a smaller share, just 2.3% of all sales. The XUV3XO was the best-selling petrol SUV for Mahindra. The XUV700 and Scorpio N also sold well as petrol models. The Thar 3-Door didn't sell many petrol versions, but the Thar Roxx did better with its petrol options, probably because they were priced well. New electric models, the XEV 9e and BE 6, also helped boost EV sales, even though they came out late in FY25.

Mahindra’s Strong Diesel Engines

Mahindra kept its strong lead in the diesel car world all through FY25. The company has three main kinds of diesel engines. There’s a smaller 1.5-litre, 3-cylinder turbo diesel engine. Then there’s a slightly bigger 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder turbo diesel. And finally, the 2.2-litre mHawk diesel, which comes in different power levels. The Bolero, for example, only runs on diesel, so all its sales come from these diesel engines.

The Scorpio, which includes both the older Scorpio Classic and the newer Scorpio N, was Mahindra’s top seller. These two together sold 1.53 lakh diesel units. But for petrol, only 11,447 Scorpio units were sold, and these were all the Scorpio N, because the Classic only comes in diesel. The XUV700 also sold well, adding 70,172 diesel units. The Thar and Thar Roxx followed, with 43,009 and 32,410 diesel units respectively. The XUV3XO sold the fewest diesel models among Mahindra’s SUVs. This is likely because it’s a smaller SUV, and people buying smaller SUVs often prefer petrol.

In total, Mahindra sold 5,25,329 diesel SUVs in FY25. This number is higher than any other car maker in India. For petrol cars, the total sales were 1,13,268 units. And for electric vehicles, Mahindra sold 12,890 units.

What This Means: An Analysis

Mahindra’s strong sales of diesel SUVs in FY25 show that many of its customers still really like diesel cars, especially models like the Scorpio and Bolero. This is interesting because the car industry is generally moving more towards petrol and electric vehicles. Even though Mahindra is also selling more petrol and electric cars, diesel is still its main strength. It helps the company keep a big part of the market. Mahindra has many different diesel engines and has priced some models smartly. This has clearly worked well with buyers, making Mahindra a top company in the SUV market in India.
