Tata Acquires Rights to Enhance 2.0L Fiat Multijet Diesel Engine
Tata Motors gets full control over 2.0L Fiat Multijet diesel engine – Green signal for development
At the end of the last financial year, Tata Motors signed a significant agreement. Through this, Tata has acquired the right to independently upgrade the 2.0-liter Multijet diesel engine manufactured by Fiat.
This diesel engine is used in the Tata Harrier (2019) and Safari (2021) models. Till now, this engine was manufactured by Fiat India under Stellantis at its Ranjangaon plant in Maharashtra. However, now Tata can make technical changes to this engine itself. This will eliminate the need for external approvals, especially for changes to electronic systems and compliance with emission standards.
Earlier, to make such changes, the ECU (engine control unit) had to be reprogrammed. This used to cost a lot of money, in some cases reaching 10 million euros. To reduce such costs, Tata can now do it itself. The deal will allow Tata to choose its own development path for future emission standards and performance targets. Similarly, Mahindra is benefiting from independent development of its mHawk diesel engine.
The Fiat Multijet engine is a very powerful one. It is used in vehicles like the Jeep Compass, MG Hector, and Jeep Meridian. The engine will continue to be manufactured at the Ranjangaon plant.
While Stellantis retains the fundamental rights to the engine, Tata can make new changes under its control. Tata will also soon introduce a new 1.5-litre GDI turbo petrol engine. This will broaden Tata's powertrain range. This will allow Tata to upgrade the Harrier and Safari models even more powerfully.
