WhatsApp is working on a couple of new features that could make the app more convenient to use. The Meta-owned messaging platform is reportedly testing a new online status indicator that lets users quickly see when a contact is active on the app. At the same time, WhatsApp is also developing new backup management tools that could help Android users manage storage more efficiently.

New Green Dot May Show When Contacts Are Online

According to reports, WhatsApp is testing a new green dot indicator in its Android beta version. The feature is said to display a small green dot on a contact's profile picture whenever that person is actively using WhatsApp.

The indicator could appear in the chat information section, allowing users to check whether a contact is online without opening the conversation. This may offer a quicker way to see who is currently available for a chat.

Reports suggest that users who do not want to share their online status will still be able to hide it through WhatsApp's privacy settings.

The feature is similar to the activity indicators already seen on apps such as Facebook, Instagram and Slack. If introduced, the green dot could replace the current "Online" text label shown in contact information screens.

WhatsApp Working On Better Backup Controls

Apart from the online status indicator, WhatsApp is also said to be developing a new section for managing backups on Android devices.

The upcoming feature could allow users to view existing backups, remove older backup files and create duplicate backups when needed. This would make it easier to manage storage space, especially for users with large chat histories and media files.

Reports also indicate that WhatsApp may provide direct shortcuts to Google Drive storage management and backup settings, making the entire process more convenient.

Android Could Get Built-In Backup Management

Google is also believed to be supporting these improvements. Recent reports suggest that Android may soon offer a dedicated section for managing WhatsApp backups directly through device settings.

With newer Google Play Services updates, users could gain easier access to backup controls without needing to open multiple menus inside the app.

Expected Availability

Both features are currently under development and are being tested in early versions of WhatsApp for Android. The company has not officially announced a release date yet, but they are expected to arrive in future updates if testing goes as planned.
