Tesla Model Y Launched in India with 622 km range At Rs 59.89 Lakh
Tesla launches the Model Y in India with two variants up to 622 km range and fast charge
Tesla has officially entered the Indian market. The American electric car company launched its Model Y as the first vehicle available here. Tesla also opened its first dealerships in Mumbai. This marks a big step for the company in India.
Model Y Variants and Performance
India gets two versions of the Tesla Model Y. The standard Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) model costs Rs 59.89 lakh (ex-showroom). This version can travel 500 km on one charge, according to WLTP tests. It goes from 0 to 100 kmph in 5.9 seconds and reaches a top speed of 201 kmph.
The Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) model costs Rs 67.89 lakh. This variant offers a longer driving range of 622 km on the WLTP cycle. It also has a top speed of 201 kmph. This version accelerates from 0 to 100 kmph in 5.6 seconds, which is slightly faster than the standard RWD model.
Design and Interior
Both Model Y versions share Tesla’s signature clean design. They feature a coupe-like shape, door handles that sit flush with the body, and a simple, modern look. This design matches Tesla’s global style. For now, Tesla focuses on offering an efficient and more affordable electric crossover. They do not offer all-wheel-drive or Performance variants yet.
Competition and Battery Technology
The Tesla Model Y will compete with other premium electric vehicles in India. These include the Kia EV6 and Hyundai Ioniq 5, as well as some entry-level luxury EVs. The Model Y RWD uses a 60 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery. The Long Range variant has a 75 kWh nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) unit. LFP batteries offer high energy density, good efficiency, and strong thermal management and safety.
Charging and Features
The Model Y supports fast charging up to 250 kW. This allows it to charge from 10% to 80% in less than 30 minutes with compatible DC fast chargers. Using Tesla’s Superchargers, it can add 267 km of range in just 15 minutes. Inside, the Model Y follows Tesla’s minimalist design. A large 15.4-inch central touchscreen controls everything, from navigation and media to climate and driving modes. The car does not have a traditional instrument cluster or head-up display.
Standard features include voice commands, over-the-air (OTA) software updates, and smartphone key access through the Tesla app. It also comes with an all-glass roof, dual wireless chargers, automatic climate control, seven airbags, and a 360-degree surround camera. Premium upholstery and large storage spaces in both the front and rear are also standard. Rear seat passengers get an eight-inch display to control various car functions. The Model Y also includes key driver assistance systems like lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and forward collision warning.
Booking Information
Customers who want to reserve the all-electric Model Y can start by paying a token amount of Rs 22,220. They need to make a follow-up payment of Rs 3 lakh within a week to confirm their booking. The SUV is available in six exterior paint colors.
Analysis
Tesla’s entry into India with the Model Y is a significant event for the country’s electric vehicle market. The company brings its advanced technology and strong brand appeal. By offering two variants with different ranges, Tesla aims to attract a wide range of buyers. The focus on safety features, advanced technology, and efficient charging will likely appeal to Indian consumers. While the initial pricing places it in the premium segment, Tesla’s long-term plans could further shape the future of electric mobility in India. This launch will also increase competition, pushing other automakers to innovate and expand their EV offerings.
