Tata Sierra EV Launch First: Electric Version Hits Roads Before Petrol Model

Tata Sierra EV to launch before petrol version with 500+ km range. Get details on features, design, and why Tata is going electric-first

Tata's bringing back the old Sierra name! But here's the twist – they're launching the electric version first, not the petrol one. That's pretty different from how car companies usually do things. If you're old enough, you might remember the original Sierra from the 90s with those funky glass windows at the back that everyone loved.

What Kind of Battery Will It Have?

The Sierra EV will probably get two battery choices, just like the Harrier EV that Tata just launched. Tata hasn't told us exactly how big these batteries will be yet, but the bigger one should let you drive more than 500 km before needing a recharge.

You'll be able to charge it really fast at those roadside charging stations. And it's got some neat tricks too – you can use the car's battery to power stuff like your laptop or even help charge another electric car if it's stuck with no power. Pretty handy during power cuts, right?

Tata might also give a lifetime warranty on the battery. That's a big deal because lots of people worry about how much it costs to replace an EV battery after a few years.

How Will It Look?

The new Sierra EV still has some design bits that'll remind you of the old one, but it looks way more modern now. One of the coolest things is how the black roof flows right into the big sunroof, making it look like one big piece of glass. It gives the car a floating roof look that's really eye-catching.

Inside, it'll be the first Tata car to have three separate screens – one for the driver, one in the middle for music and maps, and another one just for the person sitting next to the driver. That's something not even the expensive Tata cars have right now!

It'll also have all the usual fancy stuff – AC you don't need to keep adjusting, wireless phone charging pad, seats that can cool your back on hot days, and disc brakes on all wheels for better stopping power.

The outside has sharp lines, big wheels, and a light strip that runs all the way across the front. It'll definitely turn heads when it drives by!

What About the Petrol Version?

When the regular petrol Sierra comes out later, you'll get to pick between two engines. There's a new 1.5-liter turbo-petrol that makes 168 horsepower, or a 2.0-liter diesel with 170 horsepower.

You'll also get to choose how you want to shift gears – there's a regular 6-speed manual if you like to change gears yourself, a 6-speed automatic that's smooth and easy, or a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic that changes gears super quick. So there's something for everyone, depending on how you like to drive.

Why Is Tata Doing This?

Tata launching the electric version first shows how things are changing in India. Just a few years back, car companies would always launch petrol cars first and maybe, just maybe, add an electric version years later if it sold well. Now Tata's flipping things around!

This move helps Tata stay ahead in the electric car game in India. They already sell the most electric cars here with their Nexon EV, Punch EV, and now Harrier EV. Adding the Sierra EV means they'll have electric options at almost every price point.

For us buyers, it means more choices if we want an electric car in the 25-30 lakh range, where there aren't many options right now. The Sierra EV will probably go up against the MG ZS EV and the Hyundai Creta Electric that's coming soon.

Look for the Sierra EV in showrooms sometime in the second half of 2025. The petrol version will show up a few months after that.
